Whenever i read or hear about the interpretations of statistics talking about the importance of friendship for a long life, i’m not sure i will grow very old and i get a strange feeling that something might be wrong with me.

But then i think again and discover that i’ve never had many close friends, but the ones that are close, remain close over a long period of time and through times of severe communication-drought.

And i also discover that i’m pretty happy with my personal environment and that this is probably the foundation of those statistics — the fact that you feel needed and supported and can support and give in return.

I stumbled upon something lately that i had to digest for a while: “I’d only be friends with someone who i would start a company with.” — First i didn’t like it because it had a utilitarian feel, but then i started seeing it in a different way.

Being an entrepreneur constantly presents you with new challenges, regardless of the field you’re in or the size or stage of your company. Having close friendships with entrepreneurs gives me a support network of likeminded people as well as the most colorful range of lives and characters you possibly can imagine. This is the only part in my life where i like flocking together with my own type, which reminds me of a song i like and so i’m ending with a couple of lines from that song:

See I picks my friends like I pick my fruit
and Ganny told me that when I was only a youth
I don’t go ‘round trying to be what I’m not
I don’t waste my time trying ta get what you got
I work at pleasin’ me cause I can’t please you
and that’s why I do what I do
My soul flies free like a willow tree
doo wee doo wee do wee….
